Louis Reyes concedes mayoral race
WHITTIER — Louis Reyes, the top challenger to Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri’s re-election campaign, conceded Wednesday.
“I want to share that based on our current numbers and pending ballots, I will not be able to catch up with the incumbent,” Reyes wrote on Facebook. “He will be re-elected and I congratulate him.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, Reyes trailed Vinatieri by 3,698 votes. It’s unclear how many provisional and mail-in ballots remain to be counted by the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder.
“We experienced a low voter turnout in LA County (20.62%) as well as in Whittier for a Presidential Primary (historically 33%), the race was highly partisan with the Republican base that came out to support the incumbent, and I was outspent 3:1,” Reyes said.
“We ran a strong grassroots field campaign with a decent direct mail program with a great message that resonated with voters, but we needed more voter turnout.”
Christine Singer-Luna will likely finish third in the mayoral race, followed by Rolando Cano and I.L. Leon Savage.
