Lancers capture CIF Div. 4 water polo title

WHITTIER – For the second time in the last seven years, the La Serna High School Lancers girls water polo team has captured the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Championship, led by a six-goal effort from junior Casey Barragan and five goals from Bianca Borunda Saturday at the William J. Woollett Aquatics Center.

The Lancers (24-8), who were playing in their third championship final, defeated upstart Glendora, 14-12, and will advance to the CIF Southern California Division II Regional Quarterfinals Friday (Feb. 28) at No. 2 Seed San Clemente (17-14).

The Lancers defeated Troy in the 2014 title game.

La Serna had to upset top-seed Yucaipa in the semifinals this year to advance to the championship game.

The Lancers had playoff wins over Alta Loma (16-7), Ventura (12-11), Pasadena Poly (15-11) and Yucaipa (5-4).

The win was wrapped up with three goals in the final period by Barragan, Borunda and Samantha Wisher.

Glendora (29-4), which won the Palomares League title, trailed 4-3 in the first period as Barragan and Borunda scored twice for the Lancers. Glendora was led by two goals from its leading scorer, Hailey Andress (7 goals), in the game.

The Tartans held a 6-5 edge at halftime.

La Serna, behind a trio of goals from Barragan, had its biggest output of the game with six goals in the third period and took an 11-9 lead. Sophia Perez, Mia Meldrum and Borunda scored the other three goals for the Lancers.

The closest Glendora would get the rest of the way was an early goal in the fourth, to trail by one, 11-10.

Later in the period, Borunda gave the Lancers a two-goal, 13-11 lead with 1:55 left and Barragan put a cap on the victory with a goal with 1:04 remaining to lead, 14-11.
