Frustrated by fireworks, Whittier considers citing property owners
WHITTIER — The Whittier City Council on Thursday will consider an urgency ordinance that would allow police officers to immediately begin citing property owners for fireworks violations.
The action follows numerous complaints about fireworks being discharged throughout the city. Fireworks are outlawed in all parts of incorporated Whittier, except for permitted fireworks show.
Until now, only people caught discharging or storing fireworks could be cited. An update to the municipal code will now allow citations of people who allow the violations to occur, such as property owners.
Whittier officials said fireworks pose safety hazards, constitute a fire hazard, and disturb the community. A fireworks citation carries a $1,000 fine.
