Cleaning up Parnell Park expected to cost $22,000
WHITTIER — The Whittier City Council tonight will consider spending more than $22,000 to clean up and enforce a curfew at Parnell Park.
Council members agreed Jan. 6 to begin enforcing the park’s operating hours — sunrise to sunset — after escalating incidents involving homeless residents who have set up camp in the park’s picnic shelters.
Cleaning up the park will cost about $22,000, officials said, including up to $6,000 to remove hazardous waste; $8,500 to install temporary fencing; and up to $7,550 for unbudgeted staffing costs.
Assuming the city council approves the expenditure request Tuesday, a 10-day closure notice will go up at Parnell Park on Wednesday. The park would be closed for cleaning, sanitization and repairs on Jan. 27.
Parnell Park would reopen Jan. 31 with police now enforcing its hours of operation.
