City Council calls special meeting to discuss homelessness
WHITTIER — The City Council will meet in a special session tonight to continue its discussion on the local homelessness crisis.
The meeting is a continuation of an Oct. 15 session when council members brainstormed ways to tackle the issue of homeless residents sleeping in parks, vehicles, and public right-of-ways.
Whittier has been hindered in its ability to enforce local regulations after a federal court ruling prohibited cities from arresting homeless people for sleeping on public property if no shelter beds were available as alternatives. (The ruling is being appealed to the Supreme Court.)
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
